SWAN CIRCLE is excited to offer this seminar for school counselors, social workers, mental health workers and others working with Indian students and their families.
Dr. Catherine Swan Reimer, an Inupiat , has years of experience in the Counseling world, student world, and Indian and Native world. She received her doctorate in counseling/psychology from George Washington University. Her book called "Counseling the Inupiat Eskimo" is used by the University of Alaska. She did another research project for NIAAA and the University regarding the relationship between suicide, spirituality, and alcoholism. She has been a counselor at all grade levels and has taught and counseled graduate students. She has had her own practice and was a clinical supervisor for Indian clients at an Indian Rehabilitation Center. The culmination of her work is this seminar that will offer a creative "hands on approach integrating Native American spirituality and creativity into your counseling practice. This is based on research, tradition, and experience.
Morning sessions will focus on learning Native American principles of spirituality and creativity while afternoon sessions will provide exercises and experiential activities. Stories, metaphors, directed cultural activities and rituals are promising and meaningful. Dr. Catherine Reimer, owner of Swan Circle, is known for her creative and innovative approach to counseling Native Americans. This workshop will be helpful for those whose clients follow the traditional way or for those who follow the Christian way as well.
Objectives of the Workshop:
>Define the evolution of spirituality in counseling, the influence of Native American spirituality in counseling and ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) nine competencies
>List the components of spirituality and a Native American assessment tool
>Define ways of using creativity in spirituality
>Determine how to use Native American music and popular music in spirituality and counseling
>Integrate the use of dreams, symbols, and journal writing
>Define the process of the healing of memories in counseling
>Define the use of the Four Directions for prayer ceremony
>Define the influence of negative and positive spirituality in the Native American worldview
>Determine when to use humor in counseling
>List the Contours of Native American Spirituality and how they are used in counseling
>Define three approaches to Creativity and Spirituality through the use of effective activities
>List the Family Roles of Children of Alcoholics and define an experiential activity
>Define the categories of setting up a Celebration Activity
For those who want them, Continuing Education Units will be available at no cost through Salish Kootenai College, a tribally-controlled college of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation.
